File extensions won't hide
I have been tinkering to death to get the in-lined file names to not show the DOS extensions. No luck. I'm really baffled. How can I get this to work?

I'm using an Intel MacBook Pro with the latest OS (10.5.8) and FinderPop 2.2. This syndrome was also unsolvable in 10.5.7.

By the way, this is also evident on my PowerPC Power Mac G5 running the latest OS update.

Does the beta (2.2.1) solve this? Is it safe to try?

Much thanks.

Re: File extensions won't hide
Does your Finder display the names of the files in question with or without extensions?

FinderPop has an option "Use the same filenames as displayed in Finder" if I remember correctly - I'm not at my Mac right now.

If the Finder displays the names with extensions, you will need to turn these off via Finder Preferences-> Advanced -> Show all file extensions.

Let me know if that doesn't help!

Re: File extensions won't hide
In FP menus, the full file names with extensions are indeed shown for individual files for which the extension is hidden in the Finder. I never really noticed that. The .app extension for application bundles is hidden in both Finder and FP menus. The FP setting "Use file names as displayed in Finder" shows the localized names for files and folders instead of their real names and that works fine.

(I think it is not correct anymore to refer to the extensions as DOS extensions. MacOSX needs and uses file name extensions to identify the nature of a file. The old type and creator codes are are not used anymore by most of today's Mac applications and many extensions are even used for MacOSX files only.)

Re: File extensions won't hide
Unfortunately I already tried the Finder Preferences thing a long time back and indeed it still doesn't hide the file extensions like .pdf, .doc, etc.

I wish it was that easy but it isn't.

By the way, this little hitch notwithstanding, I absolutely love FinderPop.

Hopefully it's something easy and simple to fix.

Much thanks.

Re: File extensions won't hide
Hmm, I'll have to have a look at that, but I won't be able to do it for a couple of weeks - I'm going to Cork today on summer holidays and won't have Mac access until I return to Barcelona in September...

Sorry about that ... it'll be a few weeks, I'm afraid!
