FP stops working unless I leave the System Preferences open
Turly,

Thank you, thank you for your extremely useful little PrefPane. Only when something goes wrong do I really appreciate how much it's become part of my operating environment.

I recently upgraded to OSX10.8.4 and am using FP 2.4.9 (build 24901). A strange problem has surfaced, maybe after installing Keyboard Maestro, or upgrading 1Password, EarthDesk, or Dropbox. Upon boot up FP doesn't work until I open the System Preferences and click on FP - if I leave the FP pane open, it works correctly. When I close the pane, FP doesn't work.

I am using the Unused Menubar to click and can confirm that it works in the menu bar and in the top left (0:0) position, BUT only as long as I leave System Preferences open. I currently minimise the Preferences window so that it's out of the way, but I'd like to try and figure out why this happens.

I have deleted all my LogIn Items except FP. No change. I have uninstalled FP and deleted the three preference files related to it. After a reinstall, no change.

Any ideas, please?

Hey David,

That is strange, never heard of anything like this before. Presumably you installed FinderPop for "All Users" (not just you)?

The finderpop-daemon background app handles watching apps being launched and patching them. It also handles popping up the FP menu when you click in unused menubar space. It is as if the daemon stops working when System Preferences is not running ? Can you check whether it is still running when System Preferences has quit?

Re: FP stops working unless I leave the System Preferences open
Turly,

Many thanks for your quick response. Since writing to you, I've spent some considerable time booting and re-booting to try to find out which app/pref pane could be conflicting with FP. I now have it working correctly. EarthDesk preference pane, which installs a daemon (EarthDesk Core) in the LogIn Items, would appear to be the culprit. I've been using it for years without problem until I recently upgraded it to version 6.2.1. Removing EarthDesk returned FP to full functionality.

That's a bit odd, I wonder what EarthDesk is doing. Do you still have an older version (of EarthDesk) to see if that works OK?

I bet you haven't done this kind of extension juggling since Mac OS 9 :-)

I am having this problem today after installing Mavericks OS for the first time. I had to download the latest FinderPop update, which I did. But it only works when Preferences are open. Close preferences and then nothing.

How many startup items (in your Login Items) do you have?
From my response below - can you check whether the finderpop-daemon background task is still running when you close System Preferences?
